Babesiosis

Definition


What is Babesiosis?
Babesiosis is also called as Piroplasmosis and caused by Babesia, a genus of protozoal piroplasms, which is found in mammals. It is an infectious disease transmitted by Vector -Ticks and reported to be a major one in past few years around the world. Ticks are common insects that are mostly found in grass and scrubs. It is blood feeding parasite.

Generally spread in winter, the disease develops in domestic animals or mammals as it is very common infection in them. The disease is very similar to Malaria and reported in North for the first time, hence it is also called "The Malaria of The Northeast."

Symptoms


Symptoms Of Babesiosis
Babesiosis causes tiredness, loss of appetite, and a general ill feeling. If get severe, the symptoms can also be followed by fever, drenching sweats, muscle aches, and headache.

Diagnosis


Diagnosis Of Babesiosis
The parasites responsible for the disease attacks red cells in blood, hence laboratory diagnosis is considered to be the best to identify the intensity of the disease.

Treatment


Treatment Of Babesiosis
Quinine and Clindamycin are researched to be the best to fight against the Disease. Further, a regular course of Atovaquone and Azithromycin is also prescribed by doctors to the affected person.
