What is Bacterial Endocarditis?
Bacterial Endocarditis caused inflammation on the inner layer of the heart, which is called Endocardium. Besides Endocardium, the inflammation can also affect interventricular septum, the chordae tendinae, the mural endocardium, and intracardiac devices. Caused by bacterial, fungi and other organism, the disease can get severe over a period of weeks to several months. The role of microorganism decides whether the disease in infective or non-infective.

The bacterial infection may present in two ways in person suffering with Endocarditis. 1st, Acute Bacterial Endocarditis that is caused by staphylococci, streptococci, pneumococci and gonococci. 2nd, The Sub acute (SBE) illness, which is prominently caused by other streptococci or haemophilus bacteria.

This disease can be identified on the basis of its symptoms. However, the laboratory tests may include blood counts and blood cultures, electrocardiogram, X-rays of the heart and lungs, including echocardiogram.

Treatment


Treatment Of Bacterial Endocarditis
It has been researched that patients suffering with the disease can be very well treated with oral antibiotics, but if case is little severe, the patient is advised for:
  • Complete bed rest
  • Intravenous antibiotic therapy
  • In case of severe attack, surgery or replacement of the damaged heart valve.
