What is BAER?
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) is a test that is conducted to measure the brain wave activity occurred in response to certain tones. It is also known as Evoked auditory potentials; BAEP - brainstem auditory evoked potentials; evoked response audiometry. The examination is carried out to help identify nervous system abnormalities and hearing losses and to review neurological tasks.

This test is conducted under various conditions such as:
  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Brain Injury
  • Brain Malformation
  • Brain Tumor
  • Central Pontine Myelinolysis
  • Speech Disorders
  • During surgery to decrease the risk of injury to the auditory nerve and the brain
The test is basically accomplished to test the speed of nerve transmission down the nerve that transmits auditory information from the ear to brainstem.

BAER test is harmless & painless and require the patient to have detecting electrodes that are fitted to the ear lobe and skull. The lights are dimmed to reduce visual distraction and a series of sounds, usually clicks or pips, are played back. A patient may be asked to shampoo your hair before the test.
