What is Ballard Syndrome?

Ballard syndrome is a rare state described by distended liver and spleen and cracks that occur in areas of weakened bone.

Symptoms

Symptoms Of Ballard Syndrome

Some of the common symptoms of the disease are:

Affected person may have the risk of Heart failure including Diuretics, inotropes, and after load reduction
There are changes of Viral hepatitis
The disease can also cause Alcoholic liver disease
Fatty liver
Inflammation of liver

Causes

Causes Of Ballard Syndrome

Some of the common causes of the disease are:

Mononucleosis
Congestive Heart Failure
Portal hypertension - Most often secondary to cirrhosis
Hepatitis
Hereditary Spherocytosis
Sickle Cell Disease
Thalassemia Major
Polycythemia Vera
Malaria and Some Other Iinfections

Suspicion fatty infiltration, congestive heart failure (CHF), portal cirrhosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, lymphoma, portal obstruction, hepatic venous thrombosis, hepatic vein thrombosis and lymphocytic leukemia are some of the indication that help in diagnosing Ballard syndrome.

Treatment

Treatment Of Ballard Syndrome

The disease can be treated in following manner:

Suitable antibiotic regimens for infectious etiologies require
Combination chemotherapy to treat Leukemia and lymphoma that may be caused in a person suffering with Ballard syndrome
Systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis are treated with steroids and/or cytotoxic agents
Splenectomy may be required for patients with traumatic spleen injury with persistent bleeding; patients without a spleen are at increased risk of sepsis and should receive regular pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenza vaccinations
