Definition of Benign Astrocytoma
Benign tumours develops in the brain or spinal cord. The Symptoms and severity depends on the location and size of the tumours.

Symptoms


Symptoms of Benign Astrocytoma
Usually it starts with Headache, Mental changes, Increased irritability, Emotional instability, Forgetfulness and Reduced mental activity. With the intensity of the tumours, the symptoms can be developed as:

  1. Loss of initiative
  2. Loss of spontaneity
  3. Confusion
  4. Lethargy
  5. Stupor
  6. Nausea
  7. Vomiting

  2. Laminectomy for primary tumours that produce spinal cord or cauda equina compression
  3. Steroid therapy with dexamethasone minimizes cord edema and temporarily relieves symptoms until surgery can be performed.
  4. In the case of hormone-mediated tumors appropriate hormone therapy is advised
  5. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may control radicular pain from spinal cord tumors and is a useful alternative to opioid analgesics.
