Mesothelioma

Definition

Q. What is Mesothelioma?
Ans. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that originates in mesothelial cells. In 80% cases, this disease is noticed to have affected the pleura and in 20% cases, peritoneum has been affected by this dreadful disease. Mesothelioma causes death of the patient if not diagnosed early and treated properly. Usually, people who have been exposed to asbestos for a considerable period of time at their workplaces get affected by malignant mesothelioma though the disease has also been known to develop in people with little or no exposure to asbestos. Apart from this, people living near asbestos mines and in regions with more than average silicate content in the soil are also at risk of suffering from mesothelioma effects.

Symptoms

Causes and Symptoms of Mesothelioma
As mentioned above, considerable exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma. Amphibole is the fiber that is associated with this deadly disease. Industrial exposure to asbestos often leads to persistent pleural effusion, which is the most common of mesothelioma symptoms. A CT scan is done to get a clear picture of pleural effusion and for a clear diagnosis of mesothelioma. Accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma requires pleural biopsy using thoracoscopy. The symptoms of mesothelioma are similar to various other diseases of simple and complex nature, which makes it rather difficult to diagnose it in the initial stages. The severity of mesothelioma cancer is measured in four stages with the first stage being the initial stage and the fourth stage being the most advanced stage of cancer. It is essential to diagnose mesothelioma in the first two stages for fully treating the disease.

Diagnosis

Prognosis of Mesothelioma
The prognosis in cases of malignant mesothelioma depends on the stage in which the disease is diagnosed. The sooner mesothelioma is discovered the better it is for the patient. The survival rate for the patients of malignant mesothelioma has significantly increased over the past few years because of the extensive research work done in this field.

Treatment

Treatment of Mesothelioma
Treatment of mesothelioma is often made difficult because of its late diagnosis. If the disease is discovered within the first two stages of its development, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical removal can be used for treatment of mesothelioma. Typically, a combination of all these procedures is used for mesothelioma treatment. Recent researches and clinical trials in this field have brought new hope for the patients suffering from mesothelioma. Apart from this, exercising regularly, healthy dieting, and using a combination of alternative therapies also helps in effectively treating mesothelioma.
